In their second match of the season, the Oxford Blues were once again victorious, defeating Cardiff 17:3. Striking early, the Blues opened the scoring on just the second shift of the game, with a goal by Adam Rivers, who finished with two goals and two assists on the night. Finishing the first period up 8:0, the Blues relaxed their approach during the second period, much to the chagrin of Matt Alkaitis, the Blues captain-cum-coach currently sidelined with an injury. At the end of the second period, the Blues were up 10:3. After rousing speeches during the second intermission from the captain and his assistants, Rob Bradbury, Rod Lubbock, and Jarrad Aguirre, the Blues emerged from the dressing room a changed team, immediately scoring, and finishing the game on several positive notes.
In such a high scoring game, the majority of the Blues players came away with at least a point. Gino Bruni put forth a stellar performance, netting six goals and three assists, as did Julian De Hoog who finished the game with a trio of goals and two assists. Max Stetson came away from the game a single assist short of a Gordie Howe hat trick (two goals and a fight), and Henry Spelman turned away sixteen shots to secure the win for Oxford. It was a physical match, with Josh Curk and Julien Gagnon getting knocked out of the game with head/neck injuries, and Gino Bruni leaving with four minutes remaining with an upper body injury. Rod Lubbock continued to play out the match, despite also sustaining a minor injury late in the third period.
Oxford’s player of the match as chosen by Cardiff was Christian Shepherd, the rookie defenceman who put forth a gritty performance, netting two penalties and a first-rate backhanded goal mid-way through the third period. Cardiff gave a valiant effort, and the outcome is by no means a foregone conclusion when the two teams meet again on December 5th, in Cardiff.
Notes: The recipient of the Juggernaut Jacket was Max Stetson, so honoured for the second consecutive game due to his unwavering loyalty and penchant for self-sacrifice on the ice. It was the first back-to-back awarding to the same player in the history of the JJ. The Oxford Blues now have three weeks without a match, with their next game happening on December 4th, at Warwick.
